Abbi Torrance is interested in the primacy of structure or agency in human behaviour, examining systems that control us and making drawings to represent this.

In capitalist societies individuals are regarded as self-conscious responsible agents, whose actions can be explained by their beliefs and thoughts, this is acquired within the structure of established social practices, which impose on the individual. We have learnt from psychology experiments that we are easily manipulated by authority and even lie to ourselves to fit in with the crowd. Today, we live our lives to a predetermined formula prescribed by powerful global companies.

Abbi lives and works in London and has just completed an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art. Recent exhibitions include: Bread & Roses, 2012 Motorcade/FlashParade, Bristol; Form vs Form, 2012 Bearspace Gallery, London; Hung, Drawn and Altered: Drawn In, 2011 curated by Baylors & Diamond, London. She also won the Teddy Smith award for drawing at the National Open Competition in 2009.
