    painting

Alex Daw (b. 1982) lives and works in London. His work has been exhibited extensively in exhibitions such as 'The Impossible Heap' Galerie8 London, The Santorini Bienalle 2012, The Other Art Fair at the Barge House in Southbank, London & 'Paper' at Pertwee Anderson & Gold gallery in 2011 among others.

Daw’s work has been featured in publications such as Cut & Paste (21st Century Collage), Lawrence King Publishing, London & numerous online Publications.

Merging the high with the low, the everyday with the exceptional, Daw creates collages, drawings and paintings that explore the condition of contemporary visual culture. His collages & paintings (often of collages) combine references to art historical paintings, films, cartoons & found ephemera & google search image results.

Re-configuring and intertwining these images, Daw reveals the disconnection between the glossy gleam of their surfaces and the hidden and potentially gloomy reality behind their facades.

Literally cutting and slicing images, or tearing in a primal fashion; he physically and quite literally attempts to dissect the visual codes of our times.

Displacing and irritating visual language Daw negotiates themes of memory, mortality, excess, and fantasy. Paint, form, composition & Colour are constantly experimented with to provide a diverse aesthetic & continually shifting body of work.

His collages & paintings present the grotesque violence of an artificial world of images where nothing is real and everything is possible, where the cruel merges with the banal.
