Born 1986 in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, Kyle Barnes graduated from The University of Ulster, Belfast, in 2010 with a BA Hons degree in Fine and Applied Arts. Since then he has won the Towry prize at the National Open Art Competition, exhibited at the prestigious Pallant House Gallery in Chicester and the RUA in Belfast.

His paintings question our perception of beauty and cause us to look deeper than the notion of aesthetic quality. The idea of attractiveness stems also from other factors besides aesthetic perspective and Barnes highlights this through the subjects he paints. He focuses on familiarity, security, nostalgia and daily relationships which subconsciously build up a fondness in our minds for a particular place or person. A new building or place may be aesthetically pleasing but it is void of the emotional attachment that comes through spending time living, working and interacting. The visible history in Barnes work ignites memories with landscapes and scenes that are easily related to.

He has captured a cross section of Irish lifestyle which is often looked at but overlooked and in many ways is biographical of an artist who has grown up in Northern Ireland. Barnes has known many of the scenes from childhood and has witnessed the weathering that has physically altered them to the people associated with these places and the lifestyle that has taken place around them.
