    steven cox

    painting

(b.1986 in Aberdeen) Lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Through adopting a destructive approach to contemporary abstract oil painting, Steven Cox utilizes a variety of experimental, traditional and untraditional techniques to create small-scale painterly works that explore the physical boundaries of abstract oil painting. His works explore temporality; with manipulated surfaces that are regularly modified over a period of time in the artist’s studio, each work is repeatedly altered to a point of unpredictable transformation. The surface layers are regularly beaten, sanded and scratched, whilst brush marks are subjected to vigorous obsolescence. Throughout the painting process, the works generate a trace revealing multiple layers of the works history, hinting at the passage of time and destruction of information. Subdued colours, heavy brush marks, surface holes and sections of worn canvas demonstrate an approach to painting that does not conform to traditional conventions, for the works appear to have gone through a history of aging and abuse prior to being exhibited in the gallery space.

The works are therefore presented as relics, surviving examples of how Steven Cox’s oil paintings adapt and change throughout the passage of time.
